The California Thought Police

Even if you don’t live in California, you should pay attention to what happens there. Any law that passes in any state sets a precedence upon which other states base new laws. Take, for instance, the controversial California hate crimes bill, SB 1234. It has a catchy, politically correct title but it can be used to criminalize certain types of free speech such as protesting outside a political event or a rally at the state capitol.

Don’t hide behind stained glass. Become involved in your community, state and federal policy-making systems. Let these elected officials know what’s on your mind. That’s what they are there for.

Bill dubbed ’Pedophile Protection Act’

Why anyone would want to decrease the safety of our children is way beyond me. But, California state Senator, Sheila Kuehl is doing just that

Authored by lesbian state Sen. Sheila Kuehl, the bill drastically reduces requirements for mandatory reporting of the known or suspected sexual, physical and emotional abuse of children.

Why would someone want to do this? It just doesn’t make sense.

Under existing criminal law, anyone who regularly comes into contact with children is required to report an instance in which there is reason to believe a child has been molested or abused..

Typical mandatory reporters include pastors, priests, church volunteers, teachers, school volunteers, and medical personnel.

But the bill, SB1313, would eliminate mandatory reporting for anyone who can be characterized as a “volunteer.”

That means a Sunday school teacher, for example, would not be required to report her knowledge of a pastor’s molestation of children.

Critics say the bill also eliminates mandatory reporting in cases where children are having sex with each other, and severe emotional abuse may no longer be a reportable event at all.

One other thing that I think is news-worthy is this interesting fact:

Ackerman, [vice-president of legal affairs for the Pro-Family Law Center,] while working for the United States Justice Foundation, persuaded the California Attorney General’s office to issue a written opinion to the California Medical Board that affirmed the requirement of reporting for anyone who comes into regular contact with children as part of professional duties.

The report, following a petition by more than 10,000 people, presented evidence that Planned Parenthood had seen over 30,000 children in California, but not one instance of reporting to law enforcement could be found.

State-required demographic data provided by Planned Parenthood to California demonstrated that the volunteers and paid staff of Planned Parenthood had seen children ages 6 and under for sexually transmitted disease treatment.

Ackerman says SB1313 seeks to make unavailable any reports of abuse, even if the reports are redacted.

Ackerman, urging “all persons of good conscience” to write to Gov. Schwarzennegger, said, “If even one child is abused or dies because of the failure to report by a clinic, church or school, that child’s blood is on the hands of Sheila Kuehl and the people who sneaked behind the media”s back to get this sickly legislation passed.”

BELARUS: Baptists to lose property after Easter hospital visit

Filed under: Suffering for Christ — Larry @ 8:26 am

I really think that this is where America is headed if we do not stay vigilant with current events and politics. It is just this kind of regulation that is a result of government controlled expression.

From Forum18.org in Oslo, Norway.

Two Baptists are set to have personal property confiscated - in one case a car - while a third is having his pay docked after the three visited a hospital at Easter to sing hymns and hand out New Testaments, Forum 18 News Service has learnt. Local regional religious affairs official Vladimir Klevtsov told Forum 18 that the Baptists had broken the law because - amongst other violations - they did not get the hospital authorities’ permission to hold “a mass event with music and give out literature”. Their other offences included the fact that two of the Baptists are from Brest, which is outside the region where the hospital is located, and that they do not belong to a registered church. Asked by Forum 18 what the legal position is for individual Belarusian believers wishing to visit or give religious literature to hospital patients, Klevtsov said that he knew of no such precedent, as “we normally get requests only from registered religious organisations.”

Thanks for the tip, Hal.
